Whew…… All that it has taken me to get here to make this post and do this give away. January 2012, I had the courage some where deep down in my gut to call myself a photographer and call this little thing I love to do my business, my job. That’s 5 years, of hard work, failure, and success. Somethings I know now, I wish I knew when I first started, but that’s part of learning and growing. When I first told some of my loved ones, that I wanted to be a photographer, and let go of my dream, or what I thought my dream was, to go to college to become a counselor , what I’ve been preparing to do the whole 4 years of my high school career, with tests, tests and more testings. I was told, I wouldn’t make any money by taking pictures, and more discouraging things along those lines, don’t get me wrong I ‘ve had many of the same loved ones who helped me get this far, and I wouldn’t be where I am today with out some of those loved ones 😉
I’ve prayed long and hard for this mentor session giveaway, and have been praying over Genesis 1 where God created his people to care for and grow his earth and to prosper. He created work as a way for his people to utilize the gifts he gives them, all to his glory. Work is a way to glorify God in everything that we do. <3
I’ll be honest, doing a mentorship where I am the mentor is something that I have pushed away for months – actually…. years. No matter who asked, no matter who said “You should do a mentorship program!”, I always said “No, I’m not ready yet, or I’m not qualified.” In fact, as I sit here now, just the thought of calling myself a “Mentor”, having someone look to me for advice, help, encouragement, etc. makes me want to hide in a corner, curled up in the fetal position rocking back and forth. Why? Because I feel sorely unqualified, imperfect. Boy am I FAR from perfect! I most definitely don’t have everything together. I don’t have it all figured out. I don’t do everything perfectly all the time — or ever, really. That’s what a mentor is, right? Someone who is perfect at everything always. Someone who has it all together. Someone who has figured everything out already. Right?
Wait a second. Maybe that’s not true. Maybe we’re all perfectly imperfect people who don’t have it all figured out. And maybe that’s ok. *GASP!* Maybe mentors have a heart for talking with people who are going through some of the same things they went through. Maybe mentors can be people who just love to encourage others, lifting others up. Maybe mentors should be imperfect people who don’t necesarilly have it all totally figured out yet. Maybe mentors just simply have some great advice they can offer. Maybe mentors should be relatable, being able to nod and honestly say “Yes. Oh yes, I know what you’re talking about. I know what you’re going through. I’ve dealt with the same thing. I am still dealing with it. The struggle is real and you’re not alone. Here are some things I’ve been doing lately to try to deal with it… let me help you. We can do this together.”
All my life, in some form or another, I’ve believed the lie that we need to be perfect, we need to have it all together before we can help someone else, before we can approach God, before we can take that next big leap, before we can [you fill in the blank]. I know I am not alone in believing this lie! I know some of you are out there reading this right now nodding in agreement. Oh friends, can we please stop right here, right now, and decide to stop believing that lie? Because it is just simply not true! If we wait until we reach “perfect” before we take the next step, before we help others, before we approach God, we will never get there… because, quite frankly, we will never be perfect. And that’s ok!! I know I have something to offer, it’s just taken me a minute to realize that I do not have to be perfect before I offer it! 🙂
So, in an effort to take big leaps away from that lie, I’m offering a free mentoring session for one of you out there. I want to encourage, help, inspire, cheer on, support, offer advice, offer that “Oh girl, you’re not alone”, and all of the above and everything inbetween. No, I don’t have it all figured out. No, I don’t do everything perfectly. Yes, I do feel sorely inadequate because of my imperfections. Haha! I wanted to wait until I “arrived”. Until I had reached that ideal level of success and knew everything there was to know about business, photography, weddings, and life. And, well, that’s never going to happen, I’ve realized that it really is ok to not be perfect. So what am I waiting for? I don’t have to be perfect to encourage someone!
